In California, an expungement under Penal Code 1203.4 doesn’t erase your record. It reopens your case, sets aside the conviction, and dismisses it, so in most situations you can honestly tell a private employer you weren’t convicted. That change opens doors that a conviction keeps shut.
You may qualify if you completed probation, you’re not currently charged with a crime, and you’re not serving another sentence. Some serious offenses are excluded.
